Why study Dance?

Dance is a physically creative subject that students practice in KS3. Students can then go on to study Dance through Level 2 and into their 6th Form studies.

Aims / Objectives

The aim of the Dance Department at The Voyager Academy is to encourage and develop :

  • Student's enjoyment and participation in Dance
  • Their creativity and confidence
  • An understanding of different Dance styles
  • Student's awareness of the technical aspects of Dance including sound, lighting and staging
  • An understanding of the importance of team work
  • Constructive evaluations of their own work and that of others
  • To offer a range of extra curricular opportunities
  • Prepare students for further study of Dance

Key Stage 3

Year 7, 8 and 9 have one 50 minute lesson of dance each week for 3 x ½ terms (yearly). Students learn how to choreograph their own dances using different stimuli. They perform and evaluate their progress.


Key Stage 4

Students can study a new and exciting dance course: NCFE LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN CREATIVE STUDIES: PERFORMANCE SKILLS.

This course is a Vocational course that develops students’ Performance Skills. Students will have opportunities to learn and create dances, organise performances and develop their technical and creative skills.

Year 1 -Unit 03 Performance Production in Practice

Year 2 - Unit 02 Prepare and Perform (Externally assessed).

Key Stage 4

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts
(Equivalent in size to one A Level).

Core unit: Investigating Practitioners’ work

Core unit: Group Performance Workshop

Optional Unit: Developing Contemporary Dance Technique

This Level 3 Course provides learners with a theoretical and Practical Dance Education that prepares them for further studies.
